Serotonin is a mono amine neurotransmitter and is basically found in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. It regulates many important brain functions. Neurons and specific tissues development depends on serotonin levels. Hence, deficiency and disruption of serotonin causes permanent changes in behaviour and brain function. Vitamin B6 is mainly responsible for production of serotonin. Along with Vitamin B6, tryptophan also plays vital role in production of serotonin.
80 percent of total body’s serotonin is present in the gut and used to regulate intestinal movement. Remaining 20 percent is synthesised in central nervous system and is responsible for regulation of appetite, mood, sleep, contraction of muscles, memory and learning.
Vitamins For Serotonin:
- Buckwheat is a natural food that contains more vitamins, tryptophan and other starchy carbohydrates. Starchy foods are essential sources to elevate serotonin. Care must be taken for intake quantity of starchy food as it may lead to blood sugar imbalance.
- Protein in adequate quantity is also important as it maintains positive mental balance.
- Turkey has both proteins and tryptophan which elevates serotonin.
- Flax-seed oil, 1 to 2 table spoon helps keep your sulky mood away as it contains omega-3 fatty acids and tryptophan.
- Whey protein provides high levels of serotonin. This protein helps in regulation of blood sugar, appetite and immune system. This protein also allow better release of tryptophan to the brain and helps increase in the serotonin levels.
- Bananas, if eaten on daily basis also raises serotonin level. Bananas are rich in tryptophan and are a rich source of elevating serotonin levels.

Eliminate junk foods.
- Avoid caffeine drinks as tea, coffee, soft drinks and chocolate.
- Sunshine also increases serotonin levels.
Hence, whenever you feel depressed and sluggish, instead of taking antidepressant you can include above explained foods and vitamins to elevate serotonin.
