Serotonin is a mono amine neurotransmitter and is basically found in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. It regulates many important brain functions. Neurons and specific tissues development depends on serotonin levels. Hence, deficiency and disruption of serotonin causes permanent changes in behaviour and brain function. Vitamin B6 is mainly responsible for production of serotonin. Along with Vitamin B6, tryptophan also plays vital role in production of serotonin.

80 percent of total body’s serotonin is present in the gut and used to regulate intestinal movement. Remaining 20 percent is synthesised in central nervous system and is responsible for regulation of appetite, mood, sleep, contraction of muscles, memory and learning.
