Nails are the outer most layer of the skin which are made up of a protein called ‘Keratin’. The covering of protein serves as the protective layer for the finger tips and toes. Nails also requires nutrition to make them strong and healthy. Any kind of change in the shape and color of the nails is due to the deficiency of the vitamins.
Nail vitamin deficiency can result in brittle nail syndrome in which the nails become soft, weak and dry which can be broken easily. Deficiency of different vitamins have different symptoms on the nails. For instance deficiency of vitamin A affects the protein content in the body which makes the nails brittle.
Symptoms Of Nail Vitamin Deficiency:
The symptoms of which appear on the nails due to various deficiencies can be summarized in the following points:
- If you have ridged nails then you are liable of having a deficiency of vitamin A or a protein deficiency or it may be due to kidney disorder.
- Splitting, peeling or brittle nails are the symptoms for the deficiency of vitamin A or D,it could also be due to poor circulation of blood or may be due to some thyroid problem. Sometimes iron, calcium or protein deficiencies also have this symptoms.
- When the nails are curved upwards it is the symptom of iron or zinc deficiency.
- When the nails curves downwards passing down the fingers then it is the symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency. This may be also due to some disorder in the heart and liver or any kind of respiratory disorder.
- Dark and spoon shaped nails are the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency or it may be due to anemia.
- Flat nails are due to protein or iron deficiency or may be due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Wide and square nails are due to hormonal imbalances.
- Poor growth in nails is due to the deficiency of zinc.
- If you are having frequent hang nails then it is due vitamin C deficiency.
