Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which is present in few food items and most of it is taken from dietary supplements. This vitamin can also be produced when ultra violet rays strikes the skin and triggers the synthesis of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is also essential for promoting calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations in order to maintain bone mineralization and to prevent hypocalcaemia tetany.
Deficiency Of Vitamin D:
The deficiency of vitamin D in body can result in number of diseases. Some of them are:
- This deficiency results in impairing of bone mineralization which leads to the softening of the bones.
- It causes rickets disease in children
- Osteomalacia disease in adults.
- Osteoporosis is also caused due to the deficiency of this vitamin only.
- Due to the exposure to ultra violet rays there are dangers of skin cancer too.
- Due to inadequate exposure to sunlight a disease called Hypovitaminosis can be caused.
- Disorders of kidney or liver can also be there.
- Osteomalacia can be caused as one of the side effects of Hypovitaminosis.
Causes Of Vitamin D Deficiency:
The causes of vitamin D deficiency are:
- Malabsortion
- Inadequate absorption of sunlight
- Hypocalcaemia
- Causes of rickets can also be one of the reasons for the deficiency of this vitamin.
- Breast feeding infants can suffer from this deficiency if the mother has this deficiency in her.
- In infants who are feeding on breast of their and has this deficiency can have ossification of their bones due to the deficiency of this vitamin.
