Vitamin C for Gout in Males

A high dose of vitamin C can lower the risk of Gout, a type of arthritis in men– says a recent study.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a disease associated with deposition of crystal characterised by high level of uric acid in the blood stream. Monosodium urate or uric acid gets attached on the catilage of tendons, joints as well as tissues. Patients suffer from fleeting agonizing attacks of arthritis in the joints; eventually leading to persistent gouty arthritis. Further deposition of urate masses in joints create tophi.Gout is a combination of long standing increase of uric acid and acidity in the bloodstream. Neither high uric acid nor acidity alone is enough to cause gout.

Generally the patients of gout are above forty males, though there are a few cases where women have also been victimised by it. Good intake of vitamin C can do wonders in males by reducing the uric acid content in the blood.

Gout could lead to joint damage and is also related to high blood pressure, obesity, alcohol abuse and diets that contain too much of meat and cheese.

It has been found that on every 500 mg increase of daily intake of vitamin C produces a 17 percent reduction in the risk of the disease.

An orange contains around 70 mg of vitamin C. For higher levels one can take the vitamin pills.
