A vitamin D a day keeps a doctor away. Yes it’s true, go through the article to forget the apple. Among most common diseases from which we suffer are Cough and Flu. Studies have shown that people suffering from cough and flu don’t care it much and it recurs time to time. Researchers have found that intake of vitamin D daily can prevent such disease and keep us healthy.
Common Diseases
Cold, Flu, various respiratory infections like asthma or various forms of “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” (COPD). All these diseases are very common to human beings and people don’t care about these much and suffer form these diseases for long.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a collection of fat-soluble prohormones (precursor to Normal hormones). Major forms of vitamin D include vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) & vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). “Vitamin D” also refers to metabolites and other similar substances. Vitamin D3 is produced inside the skin when its is exposed to sunlight, especially ultraviolet B radiation.
Vitamin D Vs Common Cold and Flu
Studies support the fact that lower levels of vitamin D can cause an increased risk for respiratory infections, like common cold and flu. People having pre-existing respiratory disorders – e.g. asthma, emphysema may suffer more because of the vitamin deficiency. Researchers found that less than 10 nanograms(ng) of vitamin D per milliliter(ml) of blood (which is considered low) had nearly 40 percent increase in the respiratory related infection than those with 30 nanograms (ng) levels or higher. All the findings were consistent across all ages and races. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) levels increase rapidly with low levels of vitamin D.
Sources of Vitamin D
Sources of Vitamin D include foods like fortified milk, salmon (with bones), canned tuna, or fruit juice and cereal .As per the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Our body produces vitamin D naturally, when it is exposed to sunlight. Although dermatologists don’t like the advice as it makes the body vulnerable for skin cancer. But, a 5 min exposure to sun can do the magic.
