B Vitamins Can Prevent Blindness In Old People

Macular Degeneration, a common disease in old people which leads to complete loss of vision can be delayed by regular intake of B vitamins. A new study has put some light on Vitamin B’s role in preventing it. A regular intake of B vitamins can make the macular degeneration go slow and retain the eye health.

Macular Degeneration

In medical terms it is the loss of vision in the central visual field. It can make difficult the ability to recognize people and read books. But enough peripheral vision remains to do all the daily activities.

B Vitamins

B vitamins are a group of eight vitamins which are water soluble and play an important role in cell metabolism. Vitamin B6 (or pyridoxine), deficiency of which may lead to anemia, depression, dermatitis or hypertension (high blood pressure) etc. Another B vitamin is Vitamin B12  known as Cobalamin, deficiency of which lead to anemia, memory loss and various other nervous disorders. Some of the other B vitamins include Folic acid, ascorbic acid etc.

The Study and Its result

The study was made on people with age above 40. Among them randomly picked people are given diet of Vitamin B6, B12, Folic Acid either together on as a mixture. The study was done for more than 7 years with close observation of their eye conditions. It was found that people who didn’t take the B vitamins in their diet had an early Macular Degeneration compared to people who took it in their diet. Studies show that the intake of these vitamins was the early preventive measures for such disease.

Sources Of B Vitamins

B vitamins come from various natural sources, like potatoes, green vegetables, lentils, chili peppers, bananas, liver oil, turkey, liver, tuna fish, papaya, nutritional yeast (or brewer’s yeast) and molasses. But, veggies note Vitamin B12 is not available through plant products. Various dietary supplements are also a rich source of B vitamins.
