With the increasing popularity of fast food culture, vitamin supplements are considered to be shortcut to healthy living. According to market statistics there is a significant increase in the usage of vitamin and mineral supplement. Everyone is aware with the health benefits of vitamins but do you know that vitamins can be bad for you. Now the obvious question arises here is why vitamins are bad for you?
Recommended dosage of vitamins is certainly not bad but higher or mega doses of vitamins are bad for you. According to the latest research study popping mega dosage of vitamins will not increase your age but can lead to premature death. As per the scientists at Copenhagen University, overdoses of Vitamin A and E can even obstruct the natural defense mechanism of your body.
A review of 67 studies answers the question why vitamins are bad for you. The analysis of the studies was published in Journal of the American Medical Association. It shows that excess usage of antioxidants and vitamins like vitamin A and E, beta-carotene, etc. is associated to mortality rather than longevity.
Other reasons why vitamins are bad for you are that higher levels of vitamins have toxic effect. Especially in case of fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A higher levels get stored in liver and leads to liver damage. Even excess dosage of water soluble vitamins like Vitamin C can result in diarrhea.
Lastly it could be said that instead of relying on food or vitamin supplements it is advisable to change your dietary habits. A healthy and balanced diet can easily fulfill your daily vitamin and mineral requirement. Vitamin supplements are mainly required by pregnant women or woman planning to conceive, sports person under rigorous training, people suffering from malnutrition or people recovering from any illness.
