Our bodies need a lot of vitamins to function properly. Some vitamins are fat soluble others are water soluble. The water soluble vitamins that is, Vitamin B and Vitamin C are constantly let out from our bodies through urine. So, we have to take regular doses of it. Again, people who are pregnant or elderly need to take vitamin supplements.

A balanced diet contains all the vitamins. The list below will tell you what vitamins we consume and what its sources are:

  • Vitamin A:

    This is required to stimulate white blood cells to grow. Sources are: milk, green vegetables, fruits and eggs.

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine):

    Is responsible in transforming carbohydrates into energy, so it is significant for proper functioning of nervous system, heart and muscles. Sources: meat, fish and pasta.

  • Vitamin B6:

    Plays a role in formation of blood cells and functioning of nerves and brain. Sources: beans, bananas, potatoes and nuts.

  • Vitamin B12:

    Helps in formation of RBCs and looks after the nerve functions. Sources: Meat, fish, poultry, and milk.

  • Vitamin C:

    Helps strengthen bones, teeth, gums and blood vessels. Sources: tomatoes, kiwi, grape fruit, broccoli, guava, oranges and spinach.

  • Vitamin D:

    Helps in absorbing calcium, which in turn leads to strengthening bones. Sources: sunlight, milk, egg yolks and fish oils.

  • Vitamin E:

    Protects cells from damage and also required for blood cells. It is good for our skin. Sources: nuts, vegetable oils, and green leafy vegetables.

The most important vitamins have been spoken about above. People who consume a balanced diet need not worry about vitamin requirements. Do not have vitamins without checking with your doctor.
