Vitamin D helps Treat and Prevent Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a very deadly disease and almost 1/3rd of the world’s population die of this disease.

Though the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, affects many people, it is not active. It is said to be in a latent state in most of the cases. This however, does not mean that the person is free from danger, if proper care is not taken there are chances of the disease going active.

Various researches have linked lack of Vitamin D to be the main cause of Tuberculosis in many individuals. Therefore a need for vitamin D supplements has been stressed.

Various studies have supported the fact that vitamin D supplements help treat and prevent tuberculosis.

Also, eating food rich in Vitamin D will prove to be very useful. Food rich in Vitamin D are Salmon, shrimps, eggs, cow’s milk, liver, fish and fortified cereals.

According to researches the immunity levels of individuals suffering from Tuberculosis greatly improved after they took vitamin D supplements. This is because the white blood cells convert vitamin D into a protein fiber that helps fight bacteria that causes tuberculosis.

In another study conducted by Indonesian scientists, two groups of patients suffering from tuberculosis were brought together. To one group 1000 units of vitamin D was administered and to one group placebos were administered. A remarkable improvement of health was noted in the group who was taking the Vitamin D supplements in comparison to the group who was taking the placebos.

Vitamin D indeed has taken the world of science by storm. Researches and studies are further being conducted so as to come up with better forms of Vitamin D supplements.
