Prolonged Vitamin E Intake in High Dosages Causes Health Risks

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is found in eight different forms and is assumed to prevent chronic diseases in humans. Vitamin E is administered to patients with cardiovascular problems as it acts as an anticoagulant and clears the blood clots in the body.

Vitamin E deficiency is rare in human beings yet it may occur and is predominantly found in low weight babies and the ones with inability to absorb fat.

Vitamin E is one of the most powerful antioxidants that shield the body from the attack of free radicals released by the body’s metabolism. It is also believed that this antioxidant property prevents cataracts in the eyes.

In post-menopausal women high Vitamin E intake have been found to reduce the size of cysts. Men with prostrate cancer are also treated with Vitamin E. But in these cases Vitamin E has been consumed in conjunction with other fat-soluble vitamins. Though the health risk with regard to high Vitamin E consumption is low but high vitamin E intake may offset the effect of other fat-soluble vitamins in the body.

Vitamin E intake in the elderly had no significant effect on general health, body weight, levels of body proteins, liver function, kidney function, thyroid hormone count, amount of blood cells, and bleeding time.

But, Vitamin E, if taken beyond a particular time period and in an amount excess of general limits of tolerance may increase the risk of bleeding in people with bleeding problems.

Natural sources of vitamin E may not cause the harm that any synthetic form of Vitamin E supplement can cause because in synthetic form a person is exposed to a quantity that could be beyond one’s tolerance level.

Sources of Vitamin E are: almonds, green leafy vegetables, eggs, broccoli, spinach, wheat germ oil, mango, turnip, peanut oil etc.

If you ask me my opinion let me tell you, there is no alternative to a balanced diet. You need to eat everything in a limited quantity and the rest is genetics. But don’t forget to consult your physician before you pop up those Vitamin E capsules with the desire to remain young forever.
