Come summer, it is brisk sales for soft drinks and natural juices. More and more people flock fruit juice stalls or just lick an ice-cream. True, all the above foods give respite to the acute heat, but there is nothing better than tender coconut water for the ultimate inner rejuvenation and quenching thirst completely. Moreover, it is much lesser in calories (17.4 calories per 100 gms) than ice-creams, soft drinks and ever sugar added fruit juices, besides having a host of other health benefits.
Tender coconut water, scientifically, the liquid endosperm contains the vitamins belonging to the B group and also ascorbic acid. Tender coconut water is a natural isotonic drink that contains almost the same levels of electrolytes as does the human blood. It is also believed to contain traces of substances which induce rapid proliferation in the tissues of plants.
You may be surprised to know that the shelf life of tender coconut water (refrigerated or not) is one year. In their early stages of maturation, sugars in coconut water are basically reducing sugars, essentially glucose and fructose, while in mature coconuts, 90% of the sugars are non-reducing, mostly sucrose.
The mostly found proteins in coconut water are globulins, albumins, prolamines and glutelins. The presence of albumin and saline makes it a good medicinal beverage for cholera. It contains diuretic which helps increase the flow of urine. It is excellent for even infants, especially when they are ailing from intestinal problems. Tender coconut water is abundant in most of the minerals- calcium, sodium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, sulphur, copper and chlorides.
