Foods that are technologically modified either for preservation or to convert into ready-to-eat items are called processed foods. Processed foods come in box, can, bag, and carton. They are readily available, a bit expensive, and of poor quality.
Processed foods which include ready mixes, dehydrated foods, confectionery, bakery, diary products, and breakfast foods pose risk to you health. Some of the health complications that crop up due to processed foods are delineated below:
- Obesity: Processed foods which are rich in calories but poor in nutrition cause obesity, especially in children.
- Diabetes: People who consume processed foods consume more added sugars. So the risk of diabetes increases significantly among them.
- Heart Disease: Processed foods contain a dangerous type of fat called, trans fatty acids (TFA). TFAs enhance the LDL (bad) cholesterol and decrease the HDL (good) cholesterol. This leads to all sorts of heart disease. Moreover, because processed foods have high salt content they affect the heart.
- Cancer: Processed meats such as hot dogs, sausage increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.
Processed foods which are so detrimental to our health should be avoided. An awareness of the negative effects of processed foods on health can work wonders. The demand of the contemporary lifestyle is processed food, but, avoiding ready-to-eat foods lead to a healthy life. So, health experts advise that a conventional home made food increases the quality of the life as well as the life expectancy.
